Gamers everywhere will soon be cheering. Sony has announced an upcoming move to cloud storage on its PlayStation 3 consoles, meaning traditional hard drive storage of saved games will soon be a thing of the past.
By storing and later accessing saved games from the PlayStation Network, users will no longer have to fear the loss of precious game files in case their hard drives crash, systems are stolen, or any other possible calamity. Local storage will still be a part of the PlayStation 3, and users may opt out of storage in the cloud if they wish.
Although the initial move to cloud gaming storage will be available solely for PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony looks to make it accessible to all users in the future.
What PlayStation Cloud Means for Businesses
How gamers back up their saved Resident Evil game files may not directly affect your business’s everyday operations, but the move by Sony does indicate a growing trend that we’ve seen for some time now: cloud storage is becoming mainstream. As of 2009, an estimated 68% of American homes played video games, and that statistic has undoubtedly risen since then. With many of those users now being exposed to the benefits of data backup in the cloud, we’ll likely begin to see consumers demanding the benefits of cloud storage in other areas of their lives as well. And with the PS3 on the cloud bandwagon now, we can be certain others will be sure to follow.
