This Buyer’s Guide gives small, medium and large enterprises the resources they need to assist them in making what is typically a very arduous and time-consuming decision: selecting a backup software solution that effectively protects their Oracle databases.

Oracle-Backup-Software-Buyers-Guide-Logo.jpgMore organizations are choosing Oracle databases to store their mission critical data. But as this occurs,  the Oracle space is changing in two ways. First, larger organizations are increasing the number and size of their Oracle database instances; and, second, smaller organizations with limited IT staff are now purchasing Oracle databases.

Another big change that is occurring is the rise in the number of organizations that have instituted and/or are looking to institute failover and disaster recovery for their business critical systems. As the cost of hardware continues to decline and backup software continues to offer more options to do advanced forms of recovery, it is becoming both more affordable and practical for any size business to achieve this objective.

Oracle databases and the applications that rely upon these databases are at frequently the top of the list for most organizations in terms of putting in place solutions that provide failover and recovery. These are most often described as “mission critical applications” that have the least amount of tolerance for downtime and the highest demand for fast, reliable recoveries. It is in response to these inquiries that this initial DCIG 2011 Oracle Backup Software Solutions Buyer’s Guide has been produced.

The DCIG 2011 Oracle Backup Software Solutions Buyer’s Guide:

  • Lists each individual Oracle Backup Software Solution

Some of the key findings that came out of the research associated with this Buyer’s Guide include:

  • A number of vendors whose backup software that organizations might associate with Oracle backup declined to participate as their backup software did not offer the advanced Oracle integration that the majority of products found in this Buyer’s Guide provide
  • Most backup software products that specifically target virtual server backup were excluded as Oracle does not certify backup of Oracle databases on virtual server platforms other than the one that Oracle resells
  • Features were broken into two broad categories – “General Oracle Backup” and “Oracle Integration”
  • All of the backup software products covered supported both Full and Incremental Oracle Hot Backups
  • All twelve backup software products supported disk as a backup target
  • All twelve backup software products offered some level of integration with Oracle RMAN
  • 11 of the 12 products covered supported Oracle RAC
  • Only 33% of the products supported Oracle Data Guard
  • Asigra Cloud Backup, CommVault Simpana, EMC NetWorker, HP Data Protector and Quest Software NetVault Backup provided the most extensive support for the various Oracle RMAN features

Products from the following vendors are covered in this Buyer’ s Guide:
