Underserved Media and Entertainment Industries Find New Source for Enterprise Data Protection

As 2009 approaches, the traditional benchmarks for enterprise backup software such as the management of physical tape libraries, support for multiple operating systems and SAN backups are yesterday’s news. Instead support for backup to disk, continuous data protection (CDP), protection for laptops and desktops and a common repository where protected data is stored, deduplicated and available for rapid access and search is how enterprise data protection software is now defined and measured. Yet even when one factors in these new benchmarks for enterprise data protection, how products such as Atempo Time Navigator play in this rapidly evolving space, and in which verticals they best play, are less than intuitive to the untrained eye.

HP Data Protector Upgrade Evolutionary, not Revolutionary; Subtly Concedes that EMC Still Winning Best of Breed Battle for Storage in HP Shops

After a receiving a briefing on today’s announcement on HP Data Protector’s enhanced integration with VMware, one has to wonder why HP is making any noise about this new functionality at all. While Data Protector’s enhanced integration with VMware virtual machines (VMs) provides some nice integration and recovery features for its HP EVA storage system as well as EMC’s DMX storage system, it appears all HP did was take a feature it now offers for physical machines and make it available for VMware VMs as well. Further, we saw little in this announcement that would make us think Data Protector is well suited to provide improved levels of recovery for companies that are anything but primarily homogeneous HP shops.

Disk-Based Backup Does Not Equate to VTL; Insights from Day 1 at Storage Decisions in Chicago

Despite some of the rumors that were floating around that user attendance was down and not as many vendors were in attendance, I did not necessarily find that the case. I ran into Lindsay Mullen, TechTarget’s event coordinator, in the exhibit hall. She said that about 550 end-users had registered for the event and that she still expected another small influx of end-users on Wednesday. Also, in talking to other analysts and TechTarget editors who were in attendance, they said that all of the break-out sessions were full. The number of vendors exhibiting did, however, seem to be down from years past but not as much as I anticipated. Off-hand, I am guessing that the number of vendors exhibiting was about two-thirds of past events.

Diligent Technologies’ ProtecTIER Goes Under the Microscope; My Skepticism Lessens

I have expressed skepticism in the past about Diligent Technologies’ ProtecTIER™ in light of the fact its primary go-to-market strategy is the enterprise open systems and mainframe environments. This strategy prompts me to exercise extreme diligence about their technology and architecture before endorsing it. The reason? The speeds and feeds that ProtecTIER is likely to encounter in enterprise shops are unlike what inline deduplication appliances will experience in small and midsize businesses and enterprises.

Compellent’s Data Instant Reply Can Dramatically Improve Application RTOs; How Do You Migrate Data to a Thinly Provisioned Volume?

As its name suggests, Compellent’s Storage Center is a compelling product for companies to evaluate but they need to exercise caution in how they implement it and in what circumstances. Compellent’s Data Instant Replay feature should match the snapshot capabilities of other storage systems and exceed many in its recovery capabilities. However Compellent’s use of thin provisioning to provide this feature should give companies pause about what types of application data they should migrate to Storage Center and what other promised benefits of its thin provisioning feature it will not be able to deliver.

“100 Million Files Should Not be a Problem for ProStor Systems’ InfiniVault”; Part 2 of 2

InfiniVault presents itself as a network filer to server operating systems and uses a write-once file system so InfiniVault needs to theoretically manage an infinite number of files due to its infinite capacity capabilities. To explain how InfiniVault does this, both ProStor Systems’ CEO, Steve Georgis, and CTO, Randy Kerns, explained why the number of files in most customer environments rarely becomes a compelling issue. Georgis says that ProStor Systems guarantees it will support 20 million files at the bare-minimum specification. While 100 million files should not be a problem, ProStor has not yet tested InfiniVault to verify it can reach that number.
