Organizations continue to press ahead with hybrid cloud initiatives. They recognize that deploying and supporting applications, data, and workloads both on-premises and in the cloud has merit. DCIG is updating its research into backup solutions for VMware vSphere to help organizations make more informed choices about available solutions in the marketplace. Despite Broadcom’s recently announced VMware software and pricing licensing changes, many organizations will remain on VMware for the foreseeable future. The many features available in VMware software and the challenges with moving off of it will contribute to organizations making this decision.
About three years ago, DCIG formally covered virtual server backup solutions in multiple 2022-23 DCIG TOP 5 reports. Those DCIG TOP 5 reports primarily evaluated backup solutions based on how well they protected VMware vSphere. The reports primarily focused on hypervisors like VMware vSphere because vSphere had a predominant market share. While vSphere’s market position has not, for now, changed, what a difference a couple of years makes! The licensing changes announced by Broadcom at the end of 2023 prompted organizations to now consider other hypervisors.
