Announcing the DCIG 7 Pillars of Unstructured Data Management Framework

Image of the front page of the DCIG 7 Pillars of Unstructured Data Management Framework ReportWhen unstructured data within an organization reaches petabyte scale and beyond, manual methods of managing storage fail. At this scale, many organizations struggle to even determine what data they have and where it resides. As a result, potentially valuable data is trapped in silos, unavailable to business processes, and invisible to decision-makers. It even becomes a source of risk rather than reward.

The Need for an Unstructured Data Management Framework

In the last several years, DCIG has published more than ten DCIG TOP 5 reports covering various aspects of unstructured data management. In the process, DCIG discovered a significant gap in the marketplace. People lack a good mental model for understanding and addressing unstructured data management. They need a comprehensive framework to guide their decision-making process.

To fill this gap, DCIG is pleased to announce the 2026 DCIG 7 Pillars of Unstructured Data Management Framework Report. The framework report offers organizations a comprehensive, vendor-neutral approach to addressing their unstructured data management issues. The framework enables IT leaders and business executives to systematically assess their current capabilities, pinpoint key gaps, and craft strategic plans for technology investments.

3 Prerequisites for Data-driven Success

In addition to the 7 Pillars of Unstructured Data Management, the report also identifies three Foundational Elements. These Infrastructure prerequisites enable unstructured data management (UDM), but fall outside the UDM discipline.

Enterprise AI is making headlines, and not all the headlines are positive. This workload is new to most organizations and places unprecedented demands on all three of these foundational elements.

Many organizations invest millions in AI and analytics projects but achieve disappointing results. In many cases, these initiatives fail because of a lack in one or more of the foundational elements. Organizations must attend to these prerequisites, or they will waste resources and create business risk.

Foundation Element 1: Scalable Networked Storage

Data growth outpaces storage capacity and performance in many organizations. This creates immediate problems for AI initiatives. Machine learning requires access to massive datasets. Training sophisticated models demands storage systems that can handle concurrent access from multiple workloads.

Organizations need storage systems that scale without performance degradation. Traditional storage approaches fail when data volumes reach petabyte scale. IT teams must provision storage that supports the bandwidth requirements of AI training and inference workloads.

Without scalable storage, AI training can take days instead of hours. Models cannot access the data they need to achieve accuracy. The storage foundation determines whether AI initiatives succeed or fail.

Foundation Element 2: Reliable Network Connectivity

AI applications amplify this problem because various stages of the AI process place different demands on storage infrastructure. AI workloads demand low-latency access for real-time analytics and inference. Insufficient connectivity creates bottlenecks that make AI applications unusable in production environments.

Foundation Element 3: Fundamental Security Measures

Data breaches and compliance violations threaten business continuity. AI initiatives increase these risks because they require broad access to data. If access is not properly managed, AI operations and expose proprietary model data to competitors or criminals.

Organizations must implement encryption for data at rest and in transit. Access controls must track who uses what data and when they access it. Audit trails enable compliance reporting and incident investigation. Without these measures, organizations cannot safely deploy AI applications that handle customer data or business-critical information.

Security gaps force organizations to limit AI access to data. This reduces model effectiveness and prevents organizations from realizing the full value of their data assets. Effective security measures enable broader data access while maintaining protection and compliance.

The Compounding Effect: How Missing Foundations Multiply Problems

Each missing foundation element creates cascading failures throughout the organization. Poor connectivity combined with inadequate security leads teams to copy data to unsecured locations. Inadequate storage forces organizations to delete historical data that could improve AI model accuracy. Security gaps prevent data sharing that could enable breakthrough innovations.

Solid Foundations Enable AI Initiatives to Succeed

Organizations should evaluate the readiness of these foundational elements before implementing AI and other advanced analytics projects. This approach prevents the costly delays and project failuires. Solid foundations enable AI initiatives to succeed.

Three foundational elements are non-negotiable prerequisites for data-driven business transformation. Scalable networked storage handles the data volumes that AI requires. Reliable network connectivity enables the required access to data. Fundamental security measures protect valuable data assets while enabling innovation.

Success with AI and advanced analytics requires organizations to master the basics first. The foundation determines whether data initiatives create competitive advantage or become expensive failures.
