Amazon Web Service’s 2006 launch of its Simple Storage Service (S3) fundamentally changed how enterprises could access and consume storage. Enterprises no longer had to obtain, deploy, manage, and maintain storage on-premises to support their internal IT requirements. Rather, enterprise applications and developers could use the Amazon S3 application programming interface (API) to access storage over the Internet.
Designed and initially released to make web-scale computing easier for developers, many new applications and use cases have emerged. For many enterprises, these other use cases represent the primary ways they use the Amazon Web Service (AWS) Amazon S3 APIs.
However, as enterprises utilized AWS S3 to meet these various use cases, some found AWS S3 did not meet some of their specific requirements. For instance, some enterprises need or want:
- Higher levels of performance.
- More affordable cloud storage.
- More robust options to move data to and from remote or edge sites.
- Specific application integrations.
- To avoid paying API usage, egress, and other fees that AWS charges.
- To place their data in specific geographic regions where AWS may not have a data center.
Still other enterprises may compete with Amazon in the marketplace and may not want to store their data in AWS. These and other factors have led to AWS S3 alternatives entering the cloud object storage marketplace.
DCIG evaluated 24 different AWS S3 alternatives for this Enterprise edition. Across these 24 AWS S3 alternatives, DCIG evaluated over 250 features on each one. The general categories under which the 250+ evaluated features of these AWS S3 alternatives feel included:
